Services

Industry Services

The Industry Services branch includes tenement administration, royalties, finance and record maintenance. The tenement administration team manage the tenement system for the state’s exploration licenses and mining leases. Prospecting licenses are also issued by the branch. Tasmania currently has approximately 500+ mining leases and 120+ exploration licenses. Royalties and mineral production data are collected by the branch on behalf of Treasury. The Industry Services branch manages the finances for Mineral Resources Tasmania. This includes large royalty payments to fees for rentals to payments for maps etc. Record-keeping is also a fundamental part of tenement maintenance.

Core Library

Scientific Services MRT Laboratory and Core Library staff are responsible for a range of services, carried out in conjunction with Geosciences staff at both the Rosny Offices and Mornington Core Library sites. The Mornington facility provides core and sample viewing amenities, rock cutting and sampling equipment, sample preparation for XRF and XRD analyses, and a HyLogger hyperspectral core logging instrument. The XRF and XRD analyses are carried out by staff at the Rosny Laboratory, together with other services such as microscopy, petrology and chemical/NDIR.

Geological Survey

The Geological Survey Branch focusses on the collection, curation, interpretation and presentation of geoscience data in Tasmania. Our aim is to make this data available to other agencies and the public in order to support and promote Tasmania’s mineral resource potential and sustainable and rational land use planning and decisions. The Branch also contributes to the regulation of mineral exploration tenements, and the provision of laboratory services for both internal and external clients.

Geoscientific Information

The Geoscientific Information section of the Geological Survey is responsible for a diverse range of information systems and products. The spatial team produce MRT’s wide range of maps, plans and large format promotional materials, along being responsible for several databases. The Geoscientific Information officer curates our Library, processes external reports and provides information services to external clients. The Geoscientific Publications officer edits and produces MRT publications, web content and promotional materials along with sales of the products. TIGER support is responsible for the provision, maintenance and support of the TIGER Business system.

Scientific Services

The Scientific Services Branch comprises two primary sections, Land Management and the Core Library, incorporating the Scientific Laboratories. The Land Management section, based in both Rosny and Burnie, is responsible for the ongoing regulation of mineral tenements across the state, managing the Abandoned Mines Rehabilitation Trust Fund and various initiatives in collaboration with both industry and various government organisations. The Land Management section is also directly involved in land use planning and related matters on a local, state and national level.
