The Tasmanian Government has assumed a caretaker role ahead of the election for the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It is important during this time that Tasmanian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As such, no political or election material will be placed on this site.

Mineral Resources Tasmania

Macquarie Island

The geology of Macquarie Island was mapped between December 1994 and January 1996 in a joint project involving Mineral Resources Tasmania, the Australian Antarctic Foundation and the Australian Antarctic Division.

The geological data has been compiled onto a base map that has been derived from several sources:

  • The Spot multispectral satellite mosaic produced by the Australian Centre for Remote Sensing (ACRES) 1994.
  • Division of National Mapping Macquarie Island 1:50 000 topographical map (1971) warped to conform with the satellite mosaic along the coastline and lakes.
  • Incomplete aerial photography flown in 1976 (mainly in the north of the island).
  • GPS positions and field observations.

Maps have been produced at three scales: 1:50 000 which covers the whole island, two 1:25 000 scale maps which split the island just south of Sellick Bay, and seven 1:10 000 maps which have a north-south extent of five kilometres.

Output is on an ink jet plotter and lamination of maps is recommended where outside use is envisaged (although a lamination service is no longer offered via MRT).

Price

The data and a complete set of maps are available as a package for $165.

Digital data only - $55.

Maps can be purchased individually for $11 per map.
