Exploration Licences (ELs)
Would-be explorers need to take out an Exploration Licence. This can be done in writing, preferably on the application form available. It is not necessary to physically mark out the proposed area.
Licences for metallic and industrial minerals have a maximum size of 250 km2. Under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995, licences are issued for a period of five years, with no compulsory reduction during the tenure period.
Exploration Release Areas (ERAs)
Areas relinquished from existing Exploration Licences are advertised as Exploration Release Areas, with a two-month moratorium period to allow potential applicants to view relevant data and reports. Our Tasxplorer system advises companies, via a simple fax sheet, of current or pending ERAs. These fax sheets include a location map and summary geological notes, as well as contacts for further information.
No application for the relinquished area is accepted during the two-month moratorium period. Applications are received from an advertised opening date. Applications received on the same day will be treated equally, and will have priority over later applications.
Applications are assessed by a panel from Mineral Resources Tasmania using the following criteria:
- the nature of the work program submitted;
- the ability and demonstrated record of the company to operate within the Mineral Exploration Code of Practice;
- the company's experience and expertise;
- the company's ability to fulfil the expenditure committment made.
If you would like to receive advice on ERAs as they arise in Tasmania, and you are not already on our fax list, please contact Mineral Resources Tasmania.
