 | Prospecting Licences
- A prospecting licence enables the holder to prospect on some lands which are subject to the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995.
- Prospecting on private property or existing mining leases, retention licences or exploration licences may only be conducted with the consent of the property owner or the holder of the mineral tenement.
- Prospecting is not allowed on land which is subject to an application for an exploration licence or a mining lease without the approval of the Director of Mines.
- Prospecting is allowed on State Forest and Unallocated Crown Land.
- Prospecting is not allowed in National Parks, Nature Reserves, Historic Sites, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Muttonbird Reserves, Conservation Areas and Forest Reserves, Recreation Areas and in public and municipal reserves (tips, cemeteries, etc.).
- Only hand prospecting for material is allowed. The use of mechanical machinery or any explosives is prohibited. The licence will be withdrawn from any person breaching this condition.
- The use of suction dredges on prospecting licences is illegal in Tasmania.
- Prospectors will not make, dig or sink or remain or work in any shaft or excavation at a depth greater than two metres below the land surface without the written permission of the Director of Mines.
- Prospectors will conduct operations in a manner as not to cause or aggravate soil erosion.
- No major excavation is to be permitted on any natural stream bank. Banks must not be undermined.
- There will be no prospecting in roadside gutters, or extraction from road embankments.
- All care to be taken in the prospecting of materials and any diggings shall be restored to normal surface level before leaving the area.
- No track cutting is permitted.
- No timber will be cut, ring-barked or removed from areas where prospecting is carried out.
- No trees or shrubs are to be disturbed.
- If rare or unusual specimens of silicified plant material are found on Crown land these remain the property of the Crown so as to ensure that opportunity exists for proper study of the palaeofloras of these areas. Discovery of material that is not recognised as common should be referred to the Parks and Wildlife Service and Mineral Resources Tasmania.
- Discovery of mineral specimens not recognised as common should be referred to Mineral Resources Tasmania.
- No Aboriginal artefacts or site, or historic relics or site, should be damaged or removed.
- No speleothems (stalactities, etc.) are to be removed from limestone caves whether these be previously broken or not. Removal of speleothems is an offence and offenders can be prosecuted.
- No excavation is to be made in any sinkhole in a karst area or within 10 metres of the entrance of any cave.
- No prospecting is permitted within any cave, nor in any underground workings.
- Vehicles will not be taken off formed tracks.
- No fires will be lit without the permission of the relevant land manager.
