MRT gives advice to groundwater users and is the custodian of groundwater data in Tasmania. MRT provides regional assessments of catchments which are used to plan the efficient development of groundwater resources. The maps indicate the quantity and quality of groundwater available for domestic use, stock watering or irrigation.
MRT hydrogeologists identify and map the groundwater resources, mainly in agricultural areas, where the surface water is sometimes in short supply.
Hydrogeology maps, which show the rock types and the location of bores and aquifers, have been produced for some areas.
MRT oversees a continuing program to assess groundwater quality and quantity, and monitors about 40 bores around Tasmania to identify natural and artificially induced fluctuations in groundwater levels, and fluctuations in groundwater quality.
