GROUNDWATER DATABASE

Mineral Resources Tasmania is the custodian for groundwater information in Tasmania. The information provided to MRT by drilling companies under the Water Management Act 1999, and previously under the Underground Water Act 1966), is contained in this database. MRT also keeps historical information relating to wells and boreholes, many of which were drilled by the Department of Mines. Borehole information is accessible using either the groundwater map or the groundwater text based search tool. MRT intends to populate this database with information relating to other groundwater features in the future.

Groundwater text-based search

This search allows you to textually select a location and view detailed information relating to boreholes and bore water quality. Other groundwater features will be available soon.

For example you may want to search for all the bores in Orford. By typing Orford into the location field you will select all features that were labelled as being at Orford. This may not locate bores that are closer to Spring Beach to the south or Triabunna to the north because they will be labelled with a location closer to the groundwater feature. A spatial search can be used for more specific enquiries.

The attributes that appear in the information table are:

  • Feature (site) ID;
  • Easting (X coordinate) and Northing (Y coordinate);
  • Accuracy in metres (some locations are estimates of bore location);
  • Total depth of the borehole;
  • The water level below the ground surface (Standing Water Level);
  • The depths at which groundwater was located (Depth Water Struck) and corresponding cumulative yields;
  • The Total Dissolved Solids in milligrams per litre (A basic indicator of the water quality).
Groundwater map viewer

This tool allows you to view a map of groundwater features. You can zoom in and pan in any direction to display bores in your area. You are then able to select groundwater features (currently just boreholes) in an area using a selection box, then click search to return a list of these boreholes. By selecting features, you can display the depth and unique identifier for those features. Clicking on the feature ID number will open a new window with other available and printable groundwater information for that particular bore. An on-line help page is accessible from the map search to assist in searching and retrieving information.

Further information on particular features is available by contacting MRT.

Further information
Further information on particular groundwater features can be accessed by an e-mail request. The request should include the groundwater feature ID from the map, the detail you are interested in, and a contact phone number or address.

For example: ID 2541; Are there any chemical analyses done on this bore?

E-mail requests should be made to records@mrt.tas.gov.au
