The Drilling Information System contains searchable information on drilling, including the name, location, length of a hole, who had the hole drilled and for what purpose, the date the hole was drilled, and if any core or cuttings are stored at MRT's Core Library.
The system contains information on over 20,000 drill holes, dating from 1858.
Drilling is undertaken to gain information from the subsurface:
- To search for minerals, oil and gas;
- For engineering purposes such as building foundations, highways, bridge abutments and dam alignments;
- For research purposes, such as geology and palaeoclimatology;
- To search for groundwater (this information can be accessed separately via the Boreholes Information System);
- To monitor active landslips (this information can be accessed separately via the Geohazards Information System).
