In mining it's all well and good to dig up the good ore, but it needs to be processed to get the optimum yield.
Part of that step is separating the valuable particles from the dross by using gravity.
Gravity separation isn't new, it's been around for centuries, but an Australian scientist has developed the technology even further.
Professor Kevin Galvin was one of the winners of this year's Clunies Ross science award for his Reflux Classifier.
The Reflux Classifier (RC2020) processes up to 100 tones per hour of fine solids resulting in greater yield and a high grade product but the system is much smaller than previous technology.
