Detailed hydrogeological investigations were undertaken in the Swansea area in 1979 to see whether the aquifer could supplement the town water supply. The study found that the aquifer extended the full length of the spit and contained relatively fresh groundwater. Groundwater use in the area was estimated to be less than 10% of the sustainable yield.
