Landslide Information

Summary information from the Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) landslide database for each landslide feature is presented in the web map viewer. Where available references are provided and referenced Mineral Resources Tasmania documents (e.g. Report No. "UR1976_37" or "TR7_93_98") can be downloaded. Further information on individual landslides may be available in some cases by contacting Mineral Resources Tasmania directly. This extra information could include details of external (non-MRT) reports (e.g. Report "87308"), dates of landslide movements, monitoring data, photographs, scanned documents, comments, etc.

Users should understand that this map viewer, based on the MRT landslide database, only shows those landslide features and incidences of damage that have been reported to or mapped by MRT. In reality there are likely to be many more such features.

The landslide mapping presented should be used in conjunction with an understanding of the information contained within the document "Tasmanian Landslide Map Series: User Guide and Technical Methodology" (Mazengarb, C. and Stevenson, M.D. 2010. Tasmanian Geological Survey Record 2010/01).

Accuracy of Landslide Information

The co-ordinates provided refer to the position of the landslide record locator (landslide ID point), which is an arbitrary point representing the whole landslide feature. This point is generally placed on the centre-line of the landslide feature and toward the top of the landslide (within the source area), but below the headscarp. However, in some cases, particularly rock falls, the source area may not be known so this point will then be located at the resting place of the deposit or rock.

All maps have limitations in spatial accuracy and reliability and should not be relied on solely to assess whether, for example, if a given house is in a particular landslide zone or not. All lines and boundaries on maps have positional inaccuracies meaning their position on the ground could be several metres, or more, from the true position. This problem applies equally to property boundaries and various landslide zones.

The best way to gain certainty is to determine the location of the mapped features in question on the ground. This will involve a site assessment and may require professional assistance from landslide experts and surveyors to determine property boundaries and locations of any proclaimed Landslip Areas.

The data presented in the map viewer has been compiled from a range of sources, spanning several decades, with a range of mapping methodologies and levels of accuracy.

Planning Controls

Planning zones designed to manage landslide risk may have already been implemented for a particular site of interest. If so these planning zones will be defined in the relevant Local Government planning scheme with a schedule of planning controls.

In addition to Local Government planning controls, the Tasmanian State Government at the recommendation of MRT has proclaimed Landslip A and B areas in some parts of Tasmania. These legislated areas are available in the map viewer and are designed to restrict building and other activities on known unstable land.

The assessment of any site should first determine if there are any pre-existing landslide planning controls.
