Rehabilitation at Rothalls Road

Rehabilitation earthworks and revegetation have recently been completed on the former quarry site at Rothalls Road (previous ML 9M/2003) in northeast Tasmania. Guided by the Quarry Code of Practice 2017 (QCoP), the project focused on reducing safety risks, stabilising the landform, and supporting the re-establishment of native vegetation.

In March 2025, a three-day program of earthworks reshaped the quarry to create a safer and more stable landscape. Stockpiles and loose material were placed at the base of the quarry faces and capped with available topsoil to reduce slope heights. Drainage measures were installed to manage runoff, prevent erosion, and protect surrounding areas.

To prepare the site for revegetation, the quarry floor was levelled, capped with topsoil, and shallow-ripped to create conditions suitable for seed establishment. Access tracks were blocked off during rehabilitation to facilitate the establishment of vegetation by reducing soil compaction, protecting seedlings, and minimising disturbance to natural regeneration processes.

Revegetation work took place in April 2025, following the completion of earthworks. Native fertiliser was applied, and seed was hand-broadcast across the prepared areas. The seed was sourced locally and selected to reflect the native vegetation communities typical of the surrounding landscape.

The Rothalls Road rehabilitation project has created a more stable landform and established the foundations for long-term ecological recovery. Ongoing monitoring will continue to assess the success of the rehabilitation and track the progress of vegetation growth over time.
