Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) is the State's agency for geoscientific data and investigations.
Tasmania's geology is some of the most varied on Earth, with all geological periods from 1200 million years ago to the present day represented. These geological features are a major criterion for Tasmania's World Heritage Area listing.
Hundreds of maps and publications produced over more than a century are now being supplemented with pre-competitive geophysical and geographic information system data sets.
3D models are now being used to document the State's geology for mining, energy and mineral exploration, hazard assessment, land use planning and much more. Pre-competitive geoscientific data acquired and managed by MRT, such as geophysical surveys, improve our understanding of the State's foundation and thus minimises the risk for those who rely on it ¿ which is all of us.
