New study reveals state of sand supply in southern Tasmania
MRT has released a study revealing that while Tasmania has abundant sand deposits, the state’s southeast faces growing challenges in sourcing concrete-grade sand close to major construction and infrastructure hubs.
The report: A study of the sand inventory of southeastern Tasmania, provides an overview of the current state of sand supply in southeast Tasmania and will help guide industry in exploring for future sand resources to meet rising demand. Authored by state survey geologist Travis Holmes, the study confirms what industry has recognised for some time — that there are increasing constraints on the supply of concrete sand in southern Tasmania. While there are abundant resources in the north, transporting sand long distances can be costly.
