Rehabilitation of mining lands trust fund annual report 2025-26
The Rehabilitation of Mining Lands Trust Fund (RTF) was established under Section 181 of the Mineral Resources Development Act 1995 to support the rehabilitation and management of abandoned mining lands on Crown land in Tasmania. The fund’s primary objective is to return abandoned mining lands to a condition which presents no ongoing environmental or safety risks, that is safe, stable, non‑polluting, and suitable for future land use.
Mineral Resources Tasmania’s (MRT’s) Land and Tenements Branch manages the delivery of all RTF projects, ensuring that public safety, environmental protection and community values are at the centre of rehabilitation efforts.
The RTF is currently financed through an annual appropriation by the Tasmanian Parliament of $150 000. Under the Tasmanian Government's ‘Bolstering the Rehabilitation Trust Fund Initiative’ an additional $100 000 has been allocated to the fund for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 financial years.
This additional funding is allowing MRT to enhance its efforts and strengthen capacity in rehabilitating and managing legacy mining and exploration sites.
To support transparency and accountability, MRT publishes an annual report detailing the progress, outcomes and expenditure of projects funded through the RTF each financial year. General updates and information about rehabilitation projects and are also regularly highlighted in MRT's monthly newsletter.
Together, these reporting mechanisms are designed to provide clear information on rehabilitation activities, and contribute to the continual improvement of rehabilitation initiatives across Tasmania's legacy mining lands. Discover more about the RTF here.
