Future geoscientist in the making

In December 2025, Mineral Resources Tasmania had the pleasure of hosting Tim, a Year 10 work experience student from Calvin Christian School.

Tim was directly involved in HyLogger operations and hyperspectral data processing, as well as learning about natural hazards and landforms, geochemical analytical techniques, drill core processing and mineral prospectivity mapping. What did he enjoy most? Geophysics and 3D modelling — which he quickly discovered was like playing a high‑tech video game. Tim found himself slicing open virtual rock layers, and exploring the hidden world beneath Tasmania.

Of his time with MRT, Tim said:

"Science and the outdoors have always been two major interests in my life. I really appreciated the opportunity to merge those two and to learn about geology through work experience at MRT.

My experience at MRT was amazing. Being able to talk to all these people who specialised in different fields of geology was eye-opening and allowed me to glimpse into all of the different applications for this field of science. It was really interesting to learn about about how to use X-ray diffraction and the HyLogger, as well as learning about landslides.

My time at MRT has really helped me to narrow down where I would like my career in science to start, giving me a glimpse into what it might be like to work in the field of geology engaging both my interest in the Tasmanian outdoors as well as science. Thanks Jake [Moltzen] and MRT!"

MRT values these opportunities to spread the word about our natural world — and if this experience is anything to go by, the future of geoscience is looking bright!
