Recognising the contribution of Michael Vicary

After almost four decades working on Tasmania's geology, minerals and landscapes, Mineral Resources Tasmania (MRT) farewells Senior Geologist Michael Vicary on his retirement.

Michael joined the Department of Mines in 1988 after completing an Honours degree at the Australian National University, where he studied the granites of northern Flinders Island. He began his career on the Mount Read Volcanics Project before moving into mineral exploration, returning to MRT in 2003.

Throughout his career, Michael made significant contributions to Tasmania's geological mapping, databases and research. He authored or co-authored more than 70 geological maps and numerous publications, advancing understanding of the Mount Read Volcanics, Tyennan Domain and other key geological regions of Tasmania. His work has supported mineral exploration, research and land-use planning across the State. His scientific contributions were recognised through the Geological Society of Australia's F.L. Stillwell Award.

Michael was also a passionate advocate for geoheritage and geotourism, helping develop the Living Earth, Furneaux and Cradle Coast geotrails and connecting the community with Tasmania's geology and mining history. Respected as an exceptional field geologist, he was known for his meticulous observations, collaborative approach and willingness to share his knowledge.

Michael's work will continue to  influence MRT going forward through the maps, publications, databases and geotrails he helped create, and through the many geoscientists who have benefited from his expertise and mentorship. We thank Michael for his outstanding service to MRT and wish him every success and enjoyment in retirement.
