1:25,000 Scale Digital Geology of Tasmania

This dataset comprises geological rock units, boundaries, structural observations and alteration/metamorphic zones. The dataset has been compiled from geological reports, existing 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scale mapping, new field mapping and interpretation of aerial photography and airborne geophysical data. It has been compiled to fit the Land Information System Tasmania (LIST) digital topographic base. Additional information about the source and reliability of the geological data has also been captured.

The dataset currently covers around 40% of Tasmania and the capture of new data is ongoing. To see the areas that are currently mapped at this scale, or to download map sheet images please refer to the Digital Geological Atlas 1:25,000 Scale Series map index.

Digital Data Package

The 1:25,000 scale digital geological data package contains geology, alteration, structure, and geology source information. Data is in GDA94 - long./lat. and is available to download in shapefile* format from the link below. Background imagery can be obtained by connecting to our Web Map Service.

1:250,000 Scale Digital Geology of Tasmania

This dataset comprises geological rock units, boundaries and structural observations This is a state wide dataset derived from the 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scale Geological Atlas printed map series and 1:25,000 digital geology data (where available). Rock units and boundaries have been generalised and compiled to fit a 1:250,000 scale topographic base. Additional information about the source and reliability of the geological data has also been captured.

To view the map areas or to download map sheet images please refer to the Digital Geological Atlas 1:250,000 Scale Series map index.

Web Map Service

Mineral Resources Tasmania has an OGC web map service for connecting to images of Tasmanian geoscientific data. Web Map Services (WMS) use specified standards and allow web map information to be requested using URLs and returned as images that can be displayed in web browsers or desktop applications. The capabilities link below provides information on how to access individual data layers and can be copied and pasted into a desktop application. This service has been tested successfully with ArcGIS 9.2 Build 1324, MapInfo 9.0.2 and UDIG 1.1 RC14.
