Geology of Tasmania

The digital geology of Tasmania has been compiled at three scales 1:25 000, 1:250 000 and 1:500 000, each consisting of up to seven layers: geology units, alteration, faults, contacts, linears, structure readings and outcrops.

The 1:25 000 scale dataset is the most detailed mapping and currently covers around 50% of Tasmania. The data has been compiled from geological reports, existing 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scale mapping, new field mapping and interpretation of aerial photography, airborne geophysical and LiDAR data, and was compiled to fit the Land Information System Tasmania (LIST) digital topographic base.

The capture of new 1:25 000 data is ongoing, to see the areas that are currently mapped at this scale, or to download map sheet images please refer to the Digital Geological Atlas 1:25,000 Scale Series map index.

The 1:250 000 scale dataset is a state-wide dataset derived from the 1:50,000 and 1:63,360 scale Geological Atlas map series and 1:25,000 digital geology data (where available). Geology units and boundaries have been generalised and compiled to fit a 1:250,000 scale topographic base.

To view the 1:250 000 map areas or to download map sheet images please refer to the Digital Geological Atlas 1:250,000 Scale Series map index.

The 1:500 000 maps represent a state-wide dataset derived from the 1:250,000 scale digital geology of Tasmania. Geology units have been grouped, faults and contact boundaries have been generalised for 1:500,000 scale.

The state-wide geological map image can be downloaded here.

Data maybe viewed via the Web Map Viewer or downloaded using the links below. Please give the viewer time to load the correct geology data. It can take up to a minute.
